Valdosta State University sophomore Christopher Webster, of Bainbridge, has been quite the globetrotter during his time with the USA Shotgun Teams.

Webster recently qualified, through a spring selection match, to attend the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Shotgun Cup, in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. Cyprus is an island nation in the Mediterranean Sea, near Turkey.

The World Shotgun Cup was held from June 10 through June 16. Webster qualified as a member of the five-shooter double trap shotgun team, along with two shooters from Pennsylvania and two from Ohio. Webster was the only Georgian to qualify.

He competed against top shooters from 54 other countries, from all around the world. The team was led by Josh Richmond, a 2012 U.S. Olympic Team member and the staff sergeant at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit.

The USA Shotgun teams — trap, double trap and skeet — had a strong showing at the Cyprus event, but were not able to bring home any top-10 finishes.

Later this summer, Webster will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete in the annual Junior National Olympics. He will compete against 30 shooters in the event.

Webster has had considerable success in recent shooting events. He finished first in the Georgia Junior Olympic Championship for the second year in a row, fourth in the junior competition at the spring selection match in Fort Benning, Ga., and third at the fall selection match in Kerrville, Texas.

Webster was also a bronze medalist in junior competition at last year’s national championships. He is the son of Marcella and Mike Webster, of Bainbridge.
