‘Gymnast-A-Cats’ do well at state meets

The Bainbridge “Gymnast-A-Cats” competitive gymnastics teams, led by coach Lindy Murkerson, had successful runs in several different state competitions recently.

The Level Two team and the Prep Beginner team both performed well at the state championships held at Bainbridge High School in late April.

Emily Grace Tuten finished first in the vault and the floor exercise, second on the bar and the beam, and earned the gold medal all around in the 8-year-old prep beginner classification.

Four Bainbridge gymnasts swept the top four positions in the all-around standings in the 9-year-old class. Carmen Fillingame tied for first place in the vault with Marbella Rich. Carmen earned the gold in the floor exercise, second place on the bars, and third place on the beam.  Marbella finished first on beam, second on the beam, and third on the floor. Carmen and Marbella also tied for first place all around.

Lainey McRae won the gold medal on the beam, finished third on the vault, and fourth on the floor. Lainey finished second all-around. Melanie Bodrey earned third place all-around, while finishing second on the floor, and third on the bars.

Caitlin Shephard brought home first all-around in the 13-to-14-year-old division. She won gold in the vault, bars and floor. She also won the silver medal on the beam.

In the Level Two classification, several Gymnast-A-Cats performed well.

In the 7-year-old Level Two division, Anna Kate Houston won a silver medal on the balance beam and finished in fourth place all-around.

Lauren Godwin won first place on the vault, second place on the beam and the floor, and fifth place on the bars. She won the gold medal all around in the nine-year-old division. In the same division, Maloree Inlow finished in fourth place on the vault and the bars while finishing third all-around.

Makaylie Middleton earned a third place finish on the bars and sixth place overall. Abigail Anderson finished in third position on the floor routine and finished 10th all-around.  Mary Glenn Warr posted a solid fifth place finish on the vault and finished 12th all-around, competing against other gymnastics from throughout Georgia.

The Prep Optional Level One team competed in Marietta, Ga., and won the state championship for the second consecutive year. Paige Stegall placed first on the beam and won silver medals on the vault, bars and floor. Paige won the gold all-around medal at the state competition. Jessie Oliver won gold on the floor, finished third on the vault and finished in fourth on the bars and the beam, while finishing second all-around.

Kennedy Jester won gold on the bars and floor and finished third on the vault and the beam. Those scores placed Kennedy first all-around in the 11-year-old category. Sarah Kaylee Wynn won silver medals on the vault and the floor, while finishing second all-around.

The Prep Optional Level Two team finished third in the state competition also held in Marietta, Ga.

Gabby Hardee won the silver medal on the beam and finished third all around in the 11-to-12-year-old junior division. Emily Chambers finished third on the vault and posted a solid ninth place finish in the state. Finishing third on the bars and posting an 11th-place finish in the state was Josie Deal.

Caroline Middleton finished first on the floor exercise, fourth on the beam and finished third all-around in her age division.

Many of the gymnasts will move on to the national competition held at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., in mid-June.
