The Bainbridge High School Bearcats varsity soccer team opened their season Thursday, Feb. 14, with a tie at Westover.
Louis Mejia scored the lone Bainbridge goal in the 26th minute, when Garvis Kelly passed him the ball from the wing.
Westover equalized in the 50th minute on a penalty kick.
“Although I was disappointed with the way we played overall, I was pleased that we had many opportunities to score and win the game,” Bainbridge coach Jamie Ard said. “We were not dominated by any stretch of the imagination. We just failed to take advantage of our goal scoring chances.
“We made a lot of mistakes that we can correct. We’ll be fine if we can learn from our errors in this game.”

The Bearcats’ junior-varsity team fell in their season opener, losing 3-0 to the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets on Monday night.
Central scored in the first minute, eighth minute and 22nd minute.
Although Ard was disappointed in the result, he did single out several players for positive play.
“Rod Warren played because I wanted to see if he could possibly play big minutes on the varsity level this season,” he said. “As the game went on, I felt that he proved that he can. Davarrio Worthy did not start the game, but when he did get in, he stayed in. He played outstanding defense, and I think he could be ready to compete for a spot on the varsity level.
“J.C. Castro played strong in the midfield, and I think he may be able to contribute on the varsity level in the very near future. David Brock and Evan Oldaker played solid defensively, as well.”
