Bearcats top Westover, improve to 2-0

Coach Brian McCorkle’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats baseball team improved their record to 2-0 Wednesday, with a 13-2 five-inning victory over Albany’s Westover High School Patriots.

The win came in the second round of the Southwest Georgia Farm Credit Bearcats Invitational Tournament.

The Bearcats were scheduled to conclude tournament play with a Friday game against Cairo.

They will take on the Northview on Tuesday in Dothan, Ala., and begin Region 1-AAAAA play with a Friday, March 1, game at Hardaway.

The Bearcats rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first inning Wednesday, to take a 3-0 lead over the Patriots.

Centerfielder Tate Lambent got aboard on an error to open the Bearcats’ first inning. He stole second and went to third when shortstop Ben Day was safe on an error.

Lambert tagged up and came in to score when catcher Blake Voyles lofted a sacrifice fly to center. A passed ball got Day home with the second run. Third baseman Jackson Jones, who walked and moved to second on a passed ball, later scored when pitcher Jake Goodson was safe on an error.

The Bearcats picked up one run in the second and four in the third, to increase their lead to 8-1.

Second baseman Matt Burke led off the second with a single, went to second on a passed ball and came in on a single by right fielder Jordan Davis.

The Bearcats pushed across their final five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Voyles ignited the rally with a leadoff single and scored on a one-out double by Goodson. Burke singled in the final two runs of the inning.

The Patriots scored their final run in the top of the fifth.
