The four-person team of Justin Downing, Matthew Green, Steven Key and Jones Gossett shot an 18-under-par round of 54 Monday at Bainbridge Country Club to win the annual Bainbridge-Decatur County Humane Society’s “Sam Howell Memorial Pars For Paws” Golf Tournament.

The tournament is named in honor and memory of the late Sam Howell, who was an avid golfer and provided shelter for dogs, cats, ponies and many other animals large and small. He brought sick animals back to health if humanly possible and eased the suffering of those who could not be saved.

There was a tie for second place, with 17-under-par rounds of 55 between Cairo’s Hobson Chevrolet team of Joe Putnal, Bob Hobson, David Chalker and Jason Harrell, and “Sam’s Team,” consisting of Becky Nussbaum, Tuffy Nussbaum, Stuart Griffin and Matt Palmer, all of whom were friends and golf mates of Howell.
