The Bainbridge High School Lady Cats softball team dropped close games Tuesday and Wednesday to bow out of the Region 1-AAAAA Tournament, in Leesburg, Ga.
They completed their season with a 14-14 record.
On Tuesday, they were edged 4-2 by the Northside Columbus High School Lady Patriots and on Wednesday they lost 3-0 to the tournament hosts, the Lee County High School Lady Trojans.
In game one, the Lady Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a pair of doubles and a single.
The Lady Cats quickly bounced back with two runs in the top of the third, to pull even at 2-2. Right fielder Morgan Phillips reached on a fielder’s choice and moved up to second on a wild pitch. She came in to score ahead of second baseman Laura Griner, who walked when left fielder Caitlin Cato doubled.
The Lady Patriots scored single runs in the bottom of the third and bottom of the fifth to put the game away.
In the Lady Cats’ elimination game with Lee County on Wednesday, the Lady Trojans scored all three of their runs in the first two innings, plating two in the first and one in the second.
The Lady Cats’ biggest threat came in the sixth, when pitcher Brooke Bates and third baseman Caitlyn Dunlap were stranded after singling.
Lady Cats head coach Eugene Singletary praised his team for their competitive Region 1-AAAAA play.
“We were competitive with all the region teams” he said. “The season was full of highs and lows. We defeated Seminole County handily and lost just 3-2 to Region 1-AAAAA top-seeded Thomas County Central on their home field.
“Next year’s picture looks good on the surface, with eight returning, along with our No. 1 pitcher Brooke Bates.”
