Lady Cats win 3 games in Columbus tourney

Coach Eugene Singletary’s Bainbridge High School Lady Cats opened their softball season by winning three of five games at Friday and Saturday’s 23rd annual Jordan High School Invitational Tournament, in Columbus, Ga.
Friday victories over Troup County and Brookstone of Columbus put them in the “gold round,” which featured only the tournament’s top teams.
They opened tournament play Friday with a 7-4 victory over Troup County, scoring two runs in the sixth inning and three more in the eighth.
The sixth-inning runs were scored by Caitlin Cato and Laura Griner, who banged out consecutive singles.
Cato, Anna Barber and Griner all singled and came around to score in the eighth.
The Lady Cats came back Friday night to defeat Brookstone 13-0, and earn their berth in the gold division.
Their big scoring inning was the fifth, when they rallied for five runs. The big blow in the inning was a two-run triple by Morgan Powell.
In their first gold round game the Lady Cats defeated Worth County, 10-2. They never trailed, after pushing across three runs in the first inning.
Cato opened the inning with a single, and stole second and third. Barber followed with a single, driving her in, and then promply stole second. Griner followed with a walk. The runners moved up on an error and came in on a two-run single by Megan Vaughn.
In their final two gold round games, the Lady Cats lost 8-0 to Heard County, and 9-3 to Thomas County Central.
They scored all three of their runs against Thomas County Central in the first inning. They were scored by Cato, Barber and Maegan Harrison, who all singled.
