Coach Chip Ariail’s Bainbridge High School Lady Cats soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with the Berrien County High School Lady Rebels on Friday, in Nashville, Ga.
They finished the regular season with a 7-7-1 record, and they traveled to Warner Robins, Ga., on Tuesday to take on the Warner Robins High School Lady Demons in the opening round of the Region 1-AAAA playoffs. That game was not completed by press time.
Bainbridge senior midfielder Savannah Cook scored the tying goal on a 12-yard crossing shot to the right corner with four minutes remaining in the game. She took a pass from senior midfielder Anissa Jackson, who intercepted a failed clearance ball in the center of the penalty area.
Berrien County took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute. The Lady Cats surged late in the game and got several shots off before Cook’s tying goal.
Ariail liked his team’s performance against a good Lady Rebels team.
“Berrien County is 8-0-1 on the season and they lead Region 1-AA,” Ariail said. “Friday’s game was a great test for us before the Region 1-AAAA playoffs. Both teams played hard and had chances but could not push another goal in the net.
“We were a bit short-handed at midfield, but I thought Jackson, senior midfielder Shemelia Bush and freshman defender Liliana Gomez stepped up and helped fill the void.
“Junior Caitlin Cato had a tremendous game guarding Berrien County’s top forward and holding her to just a few shots and no goals.”
