Diamond Bearcats win shutout

Coach Scott Miller’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats baseball team opened their regular season Monday with a 7-0 victory over the Dothan (Ala.) High School Tigers, in the opening round of the 2012 Adidas R&S Sports Tri-State Tournament at Bearcat Field.
The Bearcats went 2-0 in the first inning. Centerfielder Tate Lambert drew a walk to open the inning and stole second. Second baseman Brandon Bates and catcher Blake Voyles waked to load the bases. First baseman Gunner Griffin drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Griffin.
Bates trotted home when right fielder Michael Faircloth was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Bearcats added their third run in the second. With two outs, Bates was hit by a pitch, stole second and came in on an RBI double by Voyles.
The Bearcats plated their final four runs in the fifth inning. A double by Voyles and a single by third baseman Jackson Jones produced the first run,
Pitcher Jake Goodson singled in Jones, stole a base and scored, after Burke reached safely on an error. An RBI double by left fielder Trevor Watts drove in Burke with the final run.
Goodson picked up the win, allowing two hits while striking out five and walking two in six innings.
Jordan Massey, who pitched the seventh inning, struck out three and gave up one hit.
The Bearcats will return to tournament action Thursday when they host the Sneads (Fla.) High School Pirates at 4 p.m.
