The Bainbridge High School Bearcats soccer team opened their season with an 8-0 shutout victory over the Monroe High School Tornadoes last Friday in Albany.
Sophomore Daniel Provence scored the first goal. He got control of a returned errant goal kick in the center of the field, moved it into scoring range and shot it past the Tornadoes’ goal keeper and into the net in the sixth minute.
In the eighth minute, sophomore Emiliano Rivera increased the advantage to 2-0 when he kicked the ball into the back of the net after Louis Mejia played it in on a corner kick.
Mejia scored again in the ninth minute, kicking a ball over the goal keeper’s head that curled inside the back post of the goal.
Freshman Emilio Hernandez increased the advantage to 4-0 when he converted a low hard shot into the lower left corner of the goal. He followed that up with another goal in the 15th minute to make it 5-0.
In the 18th minute Emiliano Rivera scored his second goal of the night after taking a corner kick from Provence putting the Bearcats ahead 6-0.
Provence and Ramiro Rodriguez scored the final two goals on converted penalty kicks.
Bearcats Coach Ard said he was proud of the way his team played against Monroe.
“We only have three regular starters returning from last year’s 12-2 team, so we are really just learning how to play together as a team right now,” he said.
