Grace sweeps homecoming games

The Grace Christian Academy Lady Cougars and Cougars basketball teams swept Valdosta’s Highland Christian Academy, in their Friday homecoming games at Perry Memorial Gymnasium.

In the opener, coach Mike Harrell’s Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Eagles, 51-31. In the nightcap, coach Steve Murr’s Cougars defeated the Eagles, 47-39.

Leading the way for the Lady Cougars was Rachel Harrell with a game-high 17 points. She hit seven field goals and one three-pointer. Jocelyn Jacobs and Emma Heard added eight points apiece.

In the boys’ game, Phillip Bowen hit a driving layup off the left glass with 1:51 left in the first quarter to break a 7-7 tie and send the Cougars to the second quarter with a 9-7 lead.

They built the advantage to 13-7 when Bowen hit a jumper in the lane just 18 seconds into the second quarter and Jack McRae hit a layup off the right glass just 12 seconds later. They were out front 23-16 at halftime and 34-28 after three quarters.

The Eagles outscored the Cougars 9-3 in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to pull even 37-37. Bryce McQuaid’s layup off the right glass with 6:07 remaining got the Cougars back out in front. McRae’s free throw with 8.4 seconds remaining sealed the victory.
