Bearcats win Lowndes Invitational

Coach Larry Cosby’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats track team outpointed a strong 18-team field to win Saturday’s Lowndes County High School Vikings Invitational Saturday in Valdosta.

Coach Tandria Phillips Lady Cats also had a solid effort, finishing fifth in a strong 13-team field.

Shawn Samuels won the 200-meter dash for a second consecutive week, finishing in a time of 21.93 seconds.

Last week at the 21st Annual L.C. Smith and Winfred Benson Relays in Albany, Samuels defeated the Mitchell County High School Eagles Justin Scott Wesley, who set records in the 200- and 100-meter dashes in last year’s state Class AA meet.

Samuels’ 200-meter time in Albany was 22.14 seconds and his 100-meter time was a personal best 11.04 seconds.

At Lowndes County he won the 200-meter dash in a time of 21.93 seconds and finished second to Scott-Wesley in the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.91. Scott-Wesley’s winning 100-meter dash time was 10.72 seconds.

Bearcat Ryan Edwards finished second in the 400-meter dash in a time of 50.91 seconds. Alton Miller was fifth in a time of 51.36 seconds.

Joseph Ausgood won the 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 9 seconds and his Bearcat teammate Hubert Thomas was fifth in a time of 2:10.61.

Bearcat Dontarius Jackson took third in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.02 and his teammate Octavious Scott took third in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 40.26.

The Bearcats 4-by-100-meter relay team of Samuels, Brandon Handsford, Octavious Scott and Aaron Hall sprinted home first in a time of 42.41.

Their 4-by-200-meter relay team of Brandon Handsford, Dontarius Jackson Terry Lewis and Rohan Gaines finished third in a time of 1:38.25.

The Bearcats 4-by-400-meter relay teams took first and fifth in times of 3:24.93 and 3:37.78. On the first-place team were Ausgood, Samuels, Ryan Edwards and Scott, and on the fifth-place team were Dylan Thomas, Remora Fields, Alton Miller and Terry Reynolds.

Bearcat Delonte Martistee won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 19 inches, and took second in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 3 inches.

Steve Crowell of the Bearcats captured third in the shot put with a heave of 49 feet, 10.50 inches. Bearcat Detainee Gurney took third in the discus with a throw of 177 feet, 3 inches.

In girls competition Saturday, Lady Cat Ashley Mango took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:29.90, and Paige Braswell was seventh in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 13:45.63.

Kahdeeijah Cooper won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 47.42 and took second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.95.

The Lady Cats 4-by-400-meter relay team of Cooper, Diamond Bouie, Ashley Mango and Raven Burney finished third with a time of 4:09.00. Bouie was second in the high jump with a time of 5:02.00.

Lady Cat Kahdeedra Sparrow was third in the discus with a throw of 96 feet, 1 inch.

The Bearcats and Lady Cats will conclude their regular season Friday night when they compete in the Westover High School Patriots and Lady Patriots Invitational at Albany’s Hugh Mills Memorial Stadium Track, which will also be the site of the boys and girls Region 1AAAA meet.

The boys Region 1AAAA preliminaries will be April 21 with the finals on April 26. The girls Region 1AAAA preliminaries will be April 27 with the finals on May 3.
