The Bainbridge High School Bearcats soccer team defeated the Brooks County High School Trojans Tuesday night in Quitman to improve their season record to 5-1.
The Bearcats, who are 1-0 in Region 1AAAA South Sub-Region play, went ahead 1-0 in the sixth minute when midfielder Daniel Provence took an assist from fellow midfielder Bryan Ordonez and put the ball in the net.
Provence, who was hot early, also scored a goal in the 11th minute to extend the Bearcats’ lead to 2-0. He followed up a shot by forward Alex Benjarano and put the rebound into the net.
Benjarano broke into the scoring column himself in the 12th minute when he hit a half volley shot in the 12th minute to put the Bearcats ahead 3-0. Bearcats coach Jamie Ard was very impressed by Benjarano’s goal, pointing out that it could possibly be the most spectacular shot of the season to this point.
Hal Clement made it 5-0 with consecutive goals in the 16th and 21st minutes.
In the 16th minute, he hit a hard shot from the top of the penalty area and in the 21st minute he took a through ball from midfielder Louis Mejia and beat the Trojans back line to the goal.
In the 27th minute, the Mejia-to-Clement combination produced another goal, and the Bearcats went to halftime with a 6-0 lead.
Sophomore forward Paul Soden took an assist from Mejia and scored in the 66th minute to increase the Bearcats’ lead to 7-0.
Forward Adam Taylor, who just came over from the Bearcats Region 1AAAA champion Bearcats basketball team, scored the Bearcats’ final goal in the 74th minute. He came up with a loose ball in front of the Trojans goal and kicked it in.
“We played pretty well offensively against Brooks County,” Coach Ard said following Tuesday night’s victory. “We passed the ball pretty well, and when we had opportunities to score we did not squander them as we have the last couple of games.”
