Bearcats defeat Syrupmakers 8-4

Coach Scott Miller’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats baseball team defeated the Cairo High School Syrupmakers 8-4 Tuesday at Cairo’s Jackie Robinson Field.

The win, which improved the Bearcats record to 5-2, was sealed by a two-run third baseman Blake Voyles homer in the top of the sixth.

Center fielder Stephen Lightfoot led the inning off with a walk, stole second and was aboard when Voyles connected with one away.

The Bearcats took the early lead, jumping out front 2-0 in the top of the first inning. The runs were scored by shortstop Steven Bench and catcher Drew Kelley, who drew consecutive walks.

They pushed across another run in the top of the third to go out front 3-0. It was scored by shortstop Bench, who singled, moved to second on a passed ball and came in on a single by right fielder Greg Lee.

The Bearcats added three more runs in the top of the fourth to go up 6-0. Left fielder Ryan Wade ignited the rally with a two-out single.

After third baseman Voyles was hit by a pitch, designated hitter Brandon Bates cleared the bases with a three-run homer.

The Syrupmakers scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on two doubles, a single, a walk and an error.
