Coach Jamie Ard’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats soccer team improved their season record to 6-0 with a 4-2 Saturday victory over the Berrien County High School Rebels at Centennial Field.

The Bearcats grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Bryan Ordonez took a shot on goal from the right wing that deflected off a Rebels defender and into the goal.

Miguel Barron improved the Bearcats’ lead to 2-0 in the eighth minute when he took a pass inside the left corner of the penalty area and kicked it into the goal.

The Rebels scored a goal to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 17th minute after winning a mad scramble for a loose ball in front of the net.

The Bearcats increased their lead to 3-1 in the 43rd minute when Hal Clement scored with an assist from Alex Benjarano, who beat a Rebels defender on the touch line and dropped a pass to him standing wide open in front of the net.

A corner kick goal by the Rebels got them back to within one, at 3-2, in the 50th minute.

Daniel Provence scored the Bearcats’ final goal in the 63rd minute. He got on a loose ball in front of the net and kicked it in.

“It was not the prettiest of games, but we got the job done,” coach Ard said after the game. “Berrien is a resilient group. They don’t quit playing hard for anything.”

Dominic Douglas and Avery Chesnutt teamed up to cover the goalkeeper duty, and they did a fair job, Ard said.

It was Dominic’s first start as a freshman and Avery has a tweaked knee. Defensively, Suraj Patel and Paul Soden stepped in to cover Marshall Mack’s duties as he is recovering from a game injury.

“I thought Javius Mitchell turned in another fine defensive effort too,” Ard said.
