Bearcats edge Liberty County

Coach Scott Miller’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats baseball team rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning Saturday in Marianna, Fla. to pull out a 5-4 victory over the Liberty County, Fla., High School Bulldogs.

The game, played at Marianna’s Chipola College field, improved the Bearcats’ season record to 4-2. They trailed 4-1 going to the top of the seventh.

The Bearcats took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Shortstop Steven Bench ignited the rally with a two-out single and came around to score on a double by designated hitter Drew Kelley.

A pair of singles, a walk and an error produced three runs that put the Bulldogs out front 3-1 in the top of the second. They added another run in the top of the sixth to go up 4-1.

The Bearcats’ decisive top of the seventh started with a walk of right fielder Trevor Watts. He moved up to second on a single by Jordan Cox.

Watts and Cox moved up to second and third on passed balls. Catcher Blake Volyles followed with a walk to load the bases. All three runners came in on a base-clearing triple by third baseman Brandon Bates. Bates came in to score when Bench grounded out for the second out.

The Bearcats returned to action Tuesday, taking on the Cairo High School Syrupmakers at Cairo’s Jackie Robinson Field.

The Bearcats will return to Marianna Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. game against the Marianna High School Bulldogs and will travel to Warner Robins Friday for a 5 p.m. Region 1AAAA game against the Warner Robins High School Demons.
