Lady Cats defeat Malone

Coach Latreisha Moon’s Bainbridge High School Lady Cats used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Malone, Fla. High School Lady Tigers 67-46 at home Tuesday night, improving their season record to 9-5.

April Thomas led the way for the Lady Cats with 16 points, Briana Wade followed with 13 and Ri’Chana Jackson put in 12.

The Lady Cats spotted the Lady Tigers an early 2-0 lead on a layup off the left glass by Curteona Breedlove just 15 seconds into the game then scored 14 unanswered points to go up by 11.

April Thomas quickly put the Lady Cats up 3-2 with a three-pointer from the right side at the 7:35 mark. Bria Harris followed with a steal and driving layup at the 7:05 mark to make it 5-2.

The Lady Cats moved out front 9-2 when Ri’Chana Jackson hit a bank shot in the lane at the 6:05 mark and Harris hit a close in jumper in the lane at the 5:32 mark.

The final five points of the Lady Cats 14-0 run came on a three-pointer from the right side by Thomas at the 5:07 mark and a layup by Thomas at the 4:24 mark. The Lady Cats led 17-9 at the end of the first quarter.

They quickly got the lead out to double digits, at 19-9, when Jasmine Kelly opened the second quarter by scoring with a layup at the 7:02 mark.

After Breedlove hit a layup with a minute left in the second quarter, the Lady Cads closed out the quarter’s scoring with a Briana Wade jumper in the lane at the 37 second mark and a Jackson jumper at the 22 second mark to go to half-time with a 32-20 lead.

The Lady Cats increased their lead to 21, at 48-27, when Jackson hit two free throws at the 3:09 mark of the third quarter. Autumn Speigner followed with a field goal at the 2:14 mark to make it 51-27.

The Lady Cats were ahead 55-32 entering the fourth quarter and they would not trail by less than double digits the rest of the way.

“We played well but we have got to be more consistent,” Coach Moon said after the game. “I thought we did not play as hard as we could overall.”

The Lady Cats will host the Pelham High School Lady Hornets Saturday at 6 p.m.
