Demons edge Bearcats 31-28

The Warner Robins High School Demons edged the Bainbridge High School Bearcats 31-28 in a Region 1AAAA football game Friday night in Warner Robins.

The Bearcats were led by quarterback Steven Bench, who rushed for 109 yards, ran for two touchdowns and passed for another.

The Demons took an early 3-0 lead when Kyle Floyd kicked a 25-yard field goal with 2:48 left in the first quarter.

Damian Bouie ran five yards for a touchdown with 6:44 left in the second quarter and Daniel Provence kicked the extra point to put the Bearcats ahead 7-3.

The score was set up by a 21 yard quarterback Bench run from the Demons 30-yard line to the Demons 9 yard line.

Bench got four more to the 5 on an option run to the right then Bouie ran right for the touchdown.

With just 40 seconds left in the second quarter, Bench ran 10 yards for a touchdown and Provence kicked the extra point to give the Bearcats a 14-3 halftime lead.

Running back Aaron Hall set up the score when he ran right for 11 yards and a first down at the 10. The Bearcats were facing a third down and four situation from the 21 when Hall broke his run to the 10.

With 8:50 remaining in the third quarter, Demons quarterback Jamaine Collins threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jalen Rountree and Floyd kicked the extra point to cut the Bearcats lead to 14-10.

Shawn Samuels returned the ensuing kickoff 51 yards from his own 24-yard line to the Demons 25-yard-line. From there, the Bearcats  drove  right back down and scored again.

They increased their lead to 21-10 on a one yard fourth down touchdown run by Bench with 5:49 remaining in the fourth quarter and a  a Provence kick.

The Demons completed the third quarter scoring when Charles Colbert ran a yard for a touchdown with just 44 seconds remaining on the clock and Floyd kicked the extra point sending the game to the fourth quarter with the Demons down by just four, 21-17.

Calvin Franklin-Moore gave the Demons a 23-14 advantage when he ran a yard for a touchdown with 6:11 remaining in the game. Floyd made it 24-21 with his good extra point kick.

Quarterback Collins ran left and broke loose for 48 yards and a touchdown with 4:08 showing on the clock and Floyd kicked the extra point to increase the Demons lead to 31-21.

With 13 seconds remaining in the game Bench threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Samuels and Provence kicked the extra point cutting the lead to the final score of 31-28. They tried an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but the Demons recovered and ran out the clock.

The Bearcats return home this Friday, hosting the Lee County High School Trojans in a Region 1AAAA game. It will also be the Bearcats annual homecoming game. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. at Centennial Field.

Saturday night’s win was the first of the season for the Demons. They are 1-7 overall and 1-4 in Region 1AAAA play.  The Bearcats are 3-5 overall and 1-4 in Region 1AAAA play.
