RECORD TURKEY nearly dwarfs young Winton Gustafson, 9-year-old boy from Tallahassee, Fla., who killed the bird in May at the Climax Gun Club.

Winton Gustafson, a 9-year-old from Tallahassee, Fla., is the holder of a new national record for a double spurred Eastern turkey.

Young Gustafson hunts with his father, Jimmy Gustafson, and he took the turkey in May of this year at the Climax Gun Club, where his father is a member.

The bird was recently certified after being scored by David Nicholson, a wildlife biologist and turkey expert with the Wild Turkey Management Program, Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.

The bird scored as follows: Beard, 11.125 inches; weight 24 pounds; left spurs 1-5/8 inches and 1-1/8 inches; right spurs 1-5/8 and 3/8 inches broken off.

Total score of the bird was 93.75.

The estimated age of the bird was 6 1/2 years.

Gustafson’s bird is the highest scoring double spurred Eastern gobbler ever recorded by the National Wild Turkey Federation and the second highest of all four U.S. species.

The Climax Gun Club was formed in 1990 as a private hunting, fishing and social retreat for owners, guests and members. It is managed by one of the owners, Butch Mosely.

Memberships and guided hunts are offered more than the 2,000 plus acres of privately owned and leased lands.
