The Bainbridge Middle School eighth-grade Bearcats lost 14-0 to Cairo’s Washington Middle School eighth-grade Tigers Thursday at Cairo High School’s West Thomas Stadium.
The loss evened the Bearcats season record at 2-2.
Mike Jones, who coaches the eighth-grade Bearcats with eighth-grade football coordinator Scott Starr, Ell Willis and Blake Carruthers, said he was pleased with the overall play of the offense and defense.
“We moved the ball up and down the field on offense the whole game,” Jones said. “We just didn’t get it in the end zone.”
The score was 0-0 at halftime.
“Turnovers hurt, but the young men played hard as they have all season. We got inside Washington’s 4-yard line at one point,” Jones said.
Tramaine McCray did a good job at defensive end, and running back Luke Brown, another two-way starter, played well at offensive right guard and linebacker, Jones said.
Washington’s first touchdown came on a 35-yard, third-quarter run, and the second touchdown came on a 5-yard run with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game.
