Long time Decatur County Board of Education Chairman Dr. Sydney Cochran and local educator John McRae are the only Board of Education candidates who will face opposition in the November election.
Qualifying for non-partisan seats for the general election ended on Friday.
The winner of the District 4 seat for which Cochran and McRae are running for, that represents most of the City of Bainbridge, will be decided on Nov. 2.
BOE incumbents Randall Jones, who represents the Climax area in District 2, and Jacky L. Grubbs, who represents the Brinson area of District 6, each automatically won re-election because no one qualified to run against them.
Cochran is a local physician and has served as the board’s chairman for more than a decade.
McRae was a former principal at John-Johnson Elementary School and is presently an instructor of early childhood education at the Bainbridge College Early County Site. In 2006, McRae was one of seven Decatur County principals named “High Performance Principals” by Gov. Sonny Perdue.
