The Bainbridge High School Bearcats basketball team swept a pair of Region 1-AAAAA victories over the weekend, to improve their season record to 9-3.

Friday night, the Bearcats rolled over the Harris County High School Tigers, 81-50, at home. On Saturday night, they defeated the Northside-Columbus High School Patriots, 68-59, on the road.

Tyree Crump hit a jumper from the left side with 35 seconds remaining in the first quarter Friday, putting Bainbridge ahead 21-13. Crump finished with 21 points.

Also in double figures for the Bearcats on Friday night were guard Dontavius Marshall, with a game-high 24 points, and forward Stephen Johnson with 10.

Deon Whitlock led the Tigers with 12 points.

On Saturday night in Columbus, the Bearcats were led by Crump, Johnson and Marshall who scored 14 points each. Justin Baker was also in double figures, with 11.

R.J. Sessions of the Patriots took game-scoring honors, with 17 points.

Bainbridge coach Rickey McCullough said he thought his teams turned in strong defensive efforts, both nights.

“Friday night, I thought our tight defense made it very difficult for Harris County to get open looks at the basket,” he said. “Saturday night, we kept the defensive pressure on again against Northside-Columbus.”

“Northside and Hardaway of Columbus are two of the best teams on the other side of our region. Northside beat Hardaway by five points when they met in a Christmas tournament.”

The Bearcats returned to action Tuesday, hosting the Miller County High School Pirates.

Bainbridge will square off against two more Region 1-AAAAA opponents this week. On Friday, the Bearcats will travel to Leesburg, Ga., to take on the Lee County High School Trojans, and Saturday, they will host Hardaway.
