Pierce leads 7th-grade Cats over Douglas

Dameon Pierce ran for three touchdowns Wednesday, leading the Bainbridge Middle School seventh-grade Bearcats to a 34-8 victory over Thomasville’s Douglas Middle School seventh-grade Bulldogs, at Centennial Field.

The win improved the Bearcats’ record to 4-0, with an open date next Wednesday.

They will complete their regular season Wednesday, Oct. 17, when they take on Cairo’s Washington Middle School seventh-grade Tigers at 5 p.m. at Cairo High School’s West Thomas Stadium.

The Bearcats will be the No. 1 seed and host of the Wednesday, Oct. 24, Southwest Georgia Middle School League’s championship game.

The Bearcats took an early 8-0 lead Wednesday when Pierce broke loose and ran down the right sideline for 55 yards and a touchdown with 6:16 left in the first quarter. Malique Pate ran in for the two point conversion.

The Bearcats increased their lead to 16-0 when Pierce ran 8 yards for a touchdown with 3:01 left in the first quarter, and Pate ran in for the two-point conversion.

Pierce’s third touchdown came just five seconds into the second quarter. He broke broke loose and ran 81 yards to the end zone, increasing the Bearcats’ lead to 22-0. The two-point conversion try was no good.

With 3:59 left in the second quarter, Trey Copeland ran 24 yards for a touchdown to give the Bearcats a 28-0 halftime lead. The two-point conversion attempt was no good.

Jalen Martin ran 80 yards for a touchdown with 4:30 left in the game to increase the Bearcats’ lead to 34-0. The two-point conversion attempt was no good.

The Bulldogs’ lone touchdown came on an 80-yard run by Darian Jackson with 10 seconds left in the game. Jackson also scored the two-point conversion on a run.
