Forestry judging teams sweep competition

Decatur County 4-Her’s spent the past few months preparing for the stiff competition they encountered at the District Forestry Field Day in Randolph County on Sept. 2.

The Junior Team of Josiah Austinson, Joey Sloan, Anders Austinson, Jacob Christie and Branch Austinson placed first in the Junior Division.

Anders Austinson was highest junior individual, and Sloan was second highest individual.

Third high individual honors went to Christie, fourth highest individual was Josiah Austinson and Branch Austinson was fifth highest individual.

Senior individuals competing were Stennes Austinson and Levi Adkins, who was also the highest senior individual, and Stennes was awarded second highest individual.

Adkins, Stennes Austinson and Christie competed at the State Forestry Field Day held at Rock Eagle 4-H Center on Sept. 18 where the team placed third.

4-H’ers competed in compass and pacing, insect and disease identification, forest evaluation, tree volume estimation, and tree identification.

Communication, problem solving, self-discipline and resiliency are among the many different skills gained from the 4-H activity.

Decatur County 4-H Program Assistant Teresa Adkins serves as the coach for the teams.
