Hurricane Michael approaches land, conditions rise in Decatur County

Hurricane Michael strengthened to a Category 4 storm just hours before it hits the Florida coast this morning.

The Decatur County Emergency Management Agency is warning residents this is a storm of unprecedented strength for our region. Southwest Georgia is currently in a Hurricane Warning.

Tropical storm conditions began to affect our area around 2 a.m. this morning.

Decatur County currently has a flash flood warning in effect with between five to 10 inches of rain expected over the next 24 hours. With the rain will be hurricane force winds up to 55-75 MPH and gusts reaching up to 110 MPH.

If you live in a mobile home, it is urged you seek alternative shelter immediately. If you do not have alternative shelter, contact Decatur County EMA at (229) 248-3869.

During peak storm hours, rescue may not be possible due to high wind speed, power lines and downed trees.
