The Lady Cat soccer team played twice over the last week, losing a 2-0 match to Cairo on Tuesday, March 7, and beating Dougherty County 10-0 on Thursday, March 9. Both of the home matches proved to be progress from the prior weeks blunder against Harris County, when the Lady Cats were beat 10-0.

“We played better against Cairo, we had opportunities, but we didn’t cash in on those opportunities,” said head coach Chip Ariail “They had a couple quick goals and we didn’t.”

The two-goal loss to Cairo is one Ariail thinks should have gone down as a victory for the Lady Cats, but it doesn’t always happen that way. Letting advantages go without capitalizing on them and conceding quick goals proved to be the downfall of the Lady Cats against Cairo.

“The kids we’re upset, and they knew that. They could have beaten Cairo,” said Ariail. “It’s not knocking Cairo by any means.”

The Lady Cats responded well after their loss by pouring goal on top of goal onto Dougherty County.

The Lady Cats made quick work of the Dougherty game, sending the game into the mercy rules causing the game to end early than expected. Seven different Lady Cats found the back of the net against. Ilean Marquez, Summer Boyd and Jamya Brinson all found the back of the net twice. Aida Diaz, Haley Thomas, Mallory West, and even the goalkeeper Victoria Sprenkle scored a goal in the 10-goal victory.

The win puts the Lady Cats in a good position for the remainder of the season, but constant improvement is needed throughout the remainder of their games. The ability to improve their game needs to come from game time as well as practice time, according to Ariail.

“From where we stand now it’s about us continuing to make progress in the areas we have been deficient,” said Ariail.” We can battle with people, but it has to be a concerted team effort. We can’t just have a few get better, the whole group has to.”

The Lady Cats now sit a 3-4 on the season, and travel to Veterans on Saturday.
