Bainbridge High School Bearcats senior defensive tackle Shammai Wilburn, the 2011 Region 1-AAAA defensive player of the year, signed a football scholarship Tuesday with the Dean College Bulldogs.

Dean is a junior college in Franklin, Mass.

By Wilburn’s side, as he signed in the BHS Gymnasium’s hospitality room, were his mother Natasha Wilburn and his grandmother Betty Weston.

During his 2011 season, Wilburn had 57 tackles — 36 solo and 21 assisted.

Bainbridge head coach Ed Pilcher and Bainbridge linebackers coach Kelvin Cochran, who witnessed the signing, praised Wilburn for his hard work and dedication.

“Shammai was in our football program all four years and he improved every year,” Pilcher said.

“Shammai was the leader of our defense,” Cochran added.

Also on hand to congratulate Wilburn at Tuesday’s signing were his cousin Kiasia Sapp, his cousin Tyree Crump, his teammate and friend Tarow Barney, his cousin Tavarius Bowens and his teammate, Dontavious Baulkman.

Wilburn said Dean head coach Todd Vassey has told him that he will have a chance to compete for a starting job on the defensive line.
