FFA chapter had outstanding year

Bainbridge High School Future Farmers of America Chapter members were honored for an outstanding school year Tuesday night at their annual awards banquet at the Cloud Livestock Facility.

The banquet opened with the presentation of Greenhand Degrees to 18 first-year FFA members who have a working knowledge of the organization.

Among those receiving Greenhand Degrees were Hannah Bius, Landen Bryant, Kay Bush, Nikki Catt, Kaitlyn Donalson, Taylor Givens, Emma Griffin, Eric Holley and Meagan Kelly.

Also receiving Greenhand Degrees were Savannah Locke, Hunter Logue, Hunter Long, Brittany Moore, Sara Ann New, Brooke Parker, Chason Phillips, Jakob Thorn and James Wilson.

Members attending the Greenhand Jamboree, held March 4 and 5 in Covington, were Savannah Locke, Megan Kelley and Taylor Givens.

Members recognized for attending the state convention last weekend in Macon were Jakob Thorn, Taylor Givens, Megan Kelley and Savannah Locke.

Recognized for attending the 83rd National FFA Convention last October in Indianapolis, Ind., were Meredith Conder, Clint Edmunds and Savannah Locke.

Meredith Conder was recognized for winning first place in the area in the job interview Career Development Event (CDE) competition and going on to finish fourth in the state.

She led a large group of FFA members honored for strong (CDE) competitions in various areas in competition. They competed against FFA members from other schools.

Miss Conder, the BHS FFA Chapter secretary, also had her secretaries book selected second in area competition. It was judged on proper membership records, minutes of chapter meetings, correspondence and neatness.

Malori Maxwell received a $1,500 National FFA Scholarship sponsored by Monsanto.

Also finishing first at area and competing at state was the parliamentary procedure team of Jason Long, Jakob Thorn, Taylor Strickland, Caroline New, Kay Bush, Briana Sapp and Brooke Parker.

Among those receiving CDE Awards were Cody Smith in tractor operation, Garrett Wooten, Chris Sanders, Blake Cook and Scott Overman in wildlife management, Malori Maxwell in floral design, and Emma Griffin, Nikki Catt, Amanda Wooten and Savannah Locke in floricultire.

In his competition at the Area 5 CDE tractor operation CDE, Cody Smith was evaluated in three areas, a written exam, problem solving and tractor operations.

In their competition for the wildlife management CDE, Garrett Wooten and Chris Sanders competed in areas relating to wildlife identification, wild turkey, whitetail deer, and aquatic and boating regulation.

While representing the chapter in the senior division of the floral design competition, Malori Maxwell demonstrated her skills in the design and marketing of floral arrangements. She and other contestants had 30 minutes to make a floral arrangement based on a scenario.

The floriculture CDE team of Emma Griffin, Nikki Catt, Amanda Wooten and Savannah Locke had to identify plant materials, take a general knowledge test, and complete problem solving and disorder identification.

The agriculture communications CDE team of Ashley Waddell, Clint Edmunds, Sara Ann New and Scott Overman were honored for competing and doing well in an editing exercise and general communications quiz at the area contest.

Chason Phillips, Hunter Logue, Tyler Friday and Andy Jeter were honored for their competitiveness in the welding CDE competition. They had to compete in electric arc welding, MIG welding, cutting and brazing.

Nolan Lovering was honored for representing the chapter in the wood working CDE competition. He developed and demonstrated his hands on skills in woodworking, critical thinking and communications in a competitive environment.

Other strong CDE competitors included Ashley Waddell and Jakob Thorn in prepared public speaking, Eric Holley, Chris Sanders and Blake Cook in environmental natural resources, Jakob Thorn in FFA quiz career development and Hannah Bius in creed speaking,

Also competing and doing well in CDE events were Codey Vaughn in lawnmower operations and maintenance, and Savannah Locke, Taylor Givens, Megan Kelly and Ashley Waddell in agricultural sales career development,

Savannah Locke was recognized by the FFA Agri-science Fair for representing the BHS FFA Chapter in the area of botany.

Second year FFA members earning Chapter Degrees for their Student Agriculture Experience (SAE) projects were Audrey Anderson, Meredith Conder, Clint Edmunds, Asia Ervin, Taylor Harrison, Jason Long, Sydney Manley, Caroline New, Briana Sapp, Taylor Strickland, Ashley Waddell and Garrett Wooten.

Chelsea Kornse and Malori Maxwell earned State Degrees, which go annually to FFA members who been enrolled in agriculture classes for a minimum of two years and have an acceptable Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) project.

Proficiency awards for students who have excelled in their SAE programs were earned by Asia Erving in lamb production, and Nolan Lovering, Taylor Strickland, Will Bius, Hannah Bius, Grant Easom, Sydney Manley and Bailey Manley in beef production.

Receiving proficiency awards for swine production were Audrey Anderson, Landen Bryant, McKenzie Conder, Katlyn Donalson, Clint Edmunds, Taylor Givens, Ivy Heard, Georgia Hodges, Megan Kelley, Alex Long, Hunter Long, Jason Long, Taylor Mills, Brittany Moore, Cody Powell, Sara Reese, Jacob Trawick, James Wilson, Garrett Wooten, Amanda Wooten and Macy Phillips.

Also winning proficiency awards were Savannah Locke and Malori Maxwell for equine production, Codey Vaughn for landscape management, Meredith Conder for agricultural communications, Robert Ames for specialty crop production and Andy Jeter for nursery operations

Receiving honorary chapter membership for rendering outstanding service in helping to advance agricultural education and the FFA were Decatur County School Superintendent Fred Rayfield, Al Brock, Gena Brock, Paul Maxwell, Dena Maxwell and Jay Mills.

Distinguished service awards were presented to River Bend Ford and Frances Edmunds.

New chapter officers were installed for the 2011-2012 school year. They are president Brianna Sapp and vice presidents Savannah Locke, Taylor Givens, Jason Long, Chason Phillips, Eric Holley and Megan Kelley.

The banquet concluded with retiring addresses by senior president Chelsea Kornse and senior vice president Malori Maxwell.
