Lady Cats win, nail down top seed

Coach Latreisha Moon’s Bainbridge High School Lady Cats defeated the Lee County High School Lady Trojans 77-42 here Friday night to wrap up the top South Sub-Region seed in next week’s Region 1AAAA Tournament.

They will enter the tournament, which will begin Wednesday and run through Saturday at the Bainbridge High School Gymnasium, with a perfect 4-0 South Sub-Region record.

Leading the way for the Lady Cats Tuesday night was April Thomas with a game-high 37 points.

Bria Harris added 15, and Diamond Bouie put in 8.

Dequera Moore was high for the Lady Trojans with 16 points. Jessica Clinton added 9.

The Lady Cats overall record going into today’s final regular season game against the Cairo High School Syrupmaids at 6 p.m. in Cairo was 17-5.

“I was proud of the way our girls played tonight,” coach Moon said after the game. “They knew it was an important game in the Sub-Region, and they had no let down.”

Ri’Chana Jackson gave the Lady Cats a commanding 22-point lead, at 38-16, when she hit a jumper from the right side with just 1:17 remaining until halftime.

The Lady Trojans’ Jessica Clinton hit a driving layup with 50 seconds left in the half to cut it to 38-18, but the Lady Cats countered with consecutive layups by Thomas and Aleah Clark at the 35- and 17-second marks to walk off with a 42-18 halftime lead.

The Lady Cats scored the first five points of the third quarter to increase their lead to 47-18.

First Diamond Bouie hit a jumper from the right baseline at the 7:45 mark, then Harris hit a free throw at the 7:30 mark, then Thomas hit a jumper at the 6:21 mark. They led 58-32 at the end of the quarter.

Thomas’ three-point jumper from the right side with 6:48 remaining in the game put the Bearcats up by 27, at 61-34.
