The organizers of the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., made Spencer “Onion” Davis’ trip even more special Saturday.
For the first time, Davis was able to see his brother’s headstone and burial site at Arlington National Cemetery, thanks to Larry Turnage and his son, Maj. Ron Turnage.
Davis said his brother, John H. Davis, served in the Navy during World War II, and after the war, settled in the Washington, D.C., area. When he died in 1972, the late Davis wanted to be buried at Arlington.
The younger Davis said Monday he could never get to the funeral nor visit his grave.
But on Saturday, Larry Turnage, who was a student under Davis at Bainbridge High School, made special arrangements for Davis to get off the tour bus and have Ron Turnage assist Davis to his brother’s grave.
“It was just as if I was dreaming,” Davis said of his whole experience Saturday.
