Dennis Lamar Lumpkin Sr.

Dennis Lamar Lumpkin Sr., 57 of Newport News, Virginia passed away peacefully at his brother’s home in Titusville, Florida on December 26. 2015.  He was born March 3, 1958 in Tifton, Georgia.  He is the eldest son of Ms. Josephine Lumpkin- Dalhouse and Mr. Willie Lumpkin Sr.

Dennis was in the United States Army for eleven years, rising to the rank of Captain. He was a member of ROTC when he attended Albany State University. He graduated as an Honor Student in Health and Physical Education in 1981. He also graduated with his Master’s Degree from Penn State University in 2012 and was awarded Outstanding Graduate Student in Health and Education.

Dennis retired from the Pennsylvania City School District in 2013.  He entered the Teaching Profession in 1992 after leaving the military.  He began teaching in the Newport News School District, before transferring to Harrisburg Pennsylvania, where he retired.  After leaving Pennsylvania, Dennis returned to Newport News,  and was employed by the Hampton City School District until the time of his death.

Dennis loved spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.  He also loved spending time with his friends. He was united in marriage to  Dr. Sadie Middleton Lumpkin-Sheafe, in 1982 at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Bainbridge Georgia.  To this union were born three children, Dennis Lamar Lumpkin Jr, Quintin Dewayne Lumpkin and Sade Ferra Lumpkin.  He has five brothers and four sisters.  He became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity as a student at Albany State University and was a charter founding member of the Ft. Eustis chapter of Kappa Iota Iota of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in Newport News..  He was actively involved in Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

He is survived by his parents Josephine Dalhouse and Willie Lumpkin Sr. the late Reverend Maxie and Laura  McCoy  and Ms. Clara Durr of Nashville, Georgia; his children Dennis Lumpkin, Jr., Quintin Dewayne Lumpkin and Sade Ferra Lumpkin ; grandchildren Dennis Lamar Lumpkin III and Alexander Lumpkin ; brothers,  Michael Lumpkin ( Joanne), Gary Lumpkin, Reginald Lumpkin ( Delavia), Marcus Lumpkin and Willie Lumpkin Jr.; sisters Andrea Roberts, Melissa Johnson, Tamika Lumpkin and Diedra Lumpkin. A special relationship with Edith Pearl Middleton  (the late Mr. Emory James Middleton Sr.) and  a host of  nieces , nephews , cousins, friends and all of his Fraternity  Brothers in Omega.

Funeral Services will be held at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 2714 Thomasville Road, Bainbridge, at 3pm, Saturday January 9, 2016. The burial is at  Breedlove Community Cemetery.

Family and friends will be received at a Repast at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church.
