Lady Cats defeat Washington

Coach Latoya Ross’ Bainbridge Middle School eighth-grade Lady Cats downed Cairo’s Washington Middle School eighth-grade Lady Tigers 28-18 Thursday at the Decatur County Memorial Coliseum to even their season record at 2-2.

They will return to action Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, when they take on the Lee County Middle School eighth-grade Lady Trojans at 4:30 p.m. in Leesburg.

The Lady Cats led 6-2 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Tigers got a little closer in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Cats 10-4 to pull to within two, 12-10, at halftime.

The Lady Cats increased their advantage to 14-10 when Dixie Landy hit a jumper from the left side with 5:38 showing on the second-quarter clock. The Lady Tigers tied it 14-14 with four consecutive free throws.

The Lady Cats then roared back with seven consecutive points to go up 21-14. They would not trail again the rest of the way. Landy hit a layup off the right glass at the 3:41 mark to make it 16-14. Tearnee Harvin then hit a free throw at the 3:33 mark to make it 17-14.

The 7-0 Lady Cats scoring run concluded with a jumper from the left side by Tierra Adams with 3:16 remaining. A free throw by Adams with 43 seconds remaining and a free throw by DeAndrea Green with 32 seconds remaining concluded the run.

They led 21-16 at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Cats continued their offensive surge with five unanswered points at the beginning of the fourth quarter to increase their advantage to 10, 26-16.

The points came on a free throw by Landy at the 5:17 mark, a jumper from the left side by Jasmine Sheffield at the 3:56 mark and a free throw by Landy at the 52-second mark.

After the Lady Tigers cut the lead to 26-18 with a field goal at the 41-second mark, the Lady Cats Harvin closed out the scoring with a layup off the right glass at the 25-second mark.

Landy led the Lady Cats in scoring with 10 points. She was followed by Talisha Butler with 8, Tiera Adams with 3, Jasmine Sheffield, Tearnee Harvin and Caryn Vandergiff all with two, and DeAndrea Green had 1.
