An inmate died at the Decatur County Jail Monday morning; however, the death is believed to have been due to natural causes, Sheriff Wiley Griffin said.

Sheriff Griffin said 33-year-old David Ray Fletcher Jr. of Bainbridge, who was by himself in a medical holding cell, passed away around 6 a.m. Monday. Coroner Peter Bruton pronounced the inmate dead at approximately 7:10 a.m.

Griffin said it is believed Fletcher died of natural causes. An autopsy has been conducted at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab and its results are pending, Griffin said.

Griffin said Fletcher had medical problems and was isolated from other inmates in a medical holding facility. Inmates in the facility are checked on periodically and records are kept of those inmates when guards and medical staff check on them, the sheriff said.

“We checked his blood pressure at 2:30 a.m. and when we checked on him again at 5 a.m., he was talkative and there weren’t any problems,” Griffin said.

Jail staff members were delivering breakfast to Fletcher at about 6 a.m. when he was found slumped over and non-responsive, Griffin said.
