A Decatur County grand jury has indicted two men in connection with the stabbing death of 29-year-old Eugenio Loredo this past August, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Francisco Resendez Tovar and Avelino Morales are both charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection with Loredo’s death.

Public Safety officers found Loredo’s body at a house on Fleming Street in central Bainbridge in the early hours of Aug. 21.

Tovar, 48, was quickly identified as a suspect and was captured eight days later in a mobile home in southern Decatur County. Morales, who was also indicted on a charge of simple battery, was charged a couple of days after Loredo’s death.

Drug defendant sentenced to prison

Forty-one-year-old Michael David Bryan of Decatur County was convicted and sentenced to 20 years for two charges of illegal possession of pseudoephedrine with intent to manufacture methamphetamine, according to District Attorney Joe Mulholland.

Pseudoephedrine, commonly found in over-the-counter decongestant medicines, is a key ingredient in the manufacture of meth.

According to the evidence, Bryan hired an associate of his to purchase pseudoephedrine pills on May 18, 2010, and again on June 23, 2010. Bryan would then take the pseudoephedrine and “cook” meth, according to Mulholland.

“We are very pleased with the sentence in this drug case,” said Mulholland. “Methamphetamine is a big problem in our circuit and it’s growing. We want to send the message that if you are involved in illegal drug activities, we are prepared to deal with you.”

Michael Bankston, chief assistant district attorney and the prosecutor who tried the Bryan case, asked the court for the maximum sentence of 10 years on each charge, to run consecutively for a total of 20 years.

Chief Superior Court Judge A. Wallace Cato agreed and sentenced Bryan to serve 10 years in the state prison system on the first charge and added an additional 10 years to be served on probation on the second charge.
