The VFW Post 4904 here in Bainbridge, have in our possession one Huia helicopter which was used extensively during the war in Vietnam, flying many combat missions in support of U.S. forces.

At our August meeting, it was proposed to place the helicopter here in Bainbridge at a location that would be visible to our citizens as well as tourists and travelers passing through our city, the location was to be the Welcome Center on U.S. 84 and U.S. 27.

The post commander and I made a presentation at their regular meeting, which met with unanimous approval. The mayor directed the city manager to draft the letter, allowing the VFW to place the helicopter at the location at no expense to the city.

After several inquires to the mayor and city manager about the status of the letter of approval, it was supposedly written and signed.

But for some reason, the letter never surfaced.

At our October VFW meeting, we decided to donate the helicopter to the infantry museum in Fort Benning, Ga.

This obvious lack of concern by our city leaders toward our veterans, who wanted to do something for our citizens, at no expense, causes me to question their motives and responsibilities to our citizens—not all of the council members are to blame. However leadership starts at the top, Mr. Mayor—shame on you. You lost mine and a few other votes.
