U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop recently honored Bainbridge City Councilman Luther Conyers Jr. by entering a statement recognizing his long service to the citizens of Bainbridge in the official Congressional Record for Jan. 21.

Wallace Sholar, a field representative for Bishop, presented Conyers with a plaque bearing the text of an honorary statement Bishop entered into the official Record. The plaque was presented at a Martin Luther King Jr. memorial service held Jan. 19.

“Not only has he served as member of the City Council in Bainbridge, he has also become a staple of the Bainbridge community,” Bishop wrote. “He served in community organizations to include: The Bainbridge-Decatur County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army and the Georgia Municipal Association.”

“Mr. Conyers is the type of public servant that I am proud to work with to improve the quality of life for the citizens in my Congressional District. Mr. Conyers lives by the principles that make this country great. He truly believes in the principles of God, country, work and family.”

A career of serving others

Conyers, a longtime educator who has served on the Bainbridge City Council continuously since 1978, was inducted into the Georgia Municipal Association Hall of Fame in 2008. He has actively served on committees that oversee employee retirement benefits and training courses for leaders of cities across Georgia.

He is also active in the Rotary Club, American Legion Post No. 502, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People the Bainbridge-Decatur County Chamber of Commerce.

He is also the council’s liaison to the city’s Planning Commission and teaches about planning and zoning issues during Bainbridge’s annual Student Government Days.
