On Sunday afternoon at approximately 3:34 p.m., Georgia State Patrol Trooper Jacob Sanchez clocked a vehicle going 78 mph in a 55 mph zone. As Sanchez attempted to initiate a stop, the vehicle fled, resulting in an accident and the arrest of D’Amato Grimsley.

According to reports, Sanchez clocked the vehicle traveling northbound, so he turned around to make the stop. However, the car began to flee and increased in speed.

The car headed toward the intersection of Highway 309 and Fountain Drive, where the driver attempted to make a left turn that resulted in the vehicle wrecking in the woods near the intersection.

Sanchez contacted Decatur County Sheriff’s Office officers, Patrol Deputy John Presilla and Investigator Vincent Edmond.

Upon arrival, Sanchez informed them he last clocked the vehicle traveling at an excess of 113 mph before it wrecked.

When Edmond approached the scene, he was informed a felony amount of marijuana had been found in the vehicle as the subject, Grimsley tried to crawl out of the passenger side of the vehicle.

Grimsley informed officers that the marijuana did not belong to him and claimed that there was another driver, however Grimsley was also unlicensed at the time.

The case has been turned over to Edmond, as he tries to investigate if there was another driver in the vehicle, who may have fled the scene.

Grimsley was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police officers, speeding, reckless driving, improper/erratic lane change, failure to maintain lane, DUI and expired drivers license.
