Blue Cube Medical is expanding to Georgia this month to address increasing healthcare costs with its patient financial assistance and insurance negotiation solution for residents in the Bainbridge area.

Medical insurance isn’t what it used to be. The days of low or no medical deductibles are few and far in between with high deductible plans becoming a financially devastating norm.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, health insurance premiums are approximately $4,706, average employer health insurance costs on average $15,000, and out-of-pocket costs such as copays and deductibles average $3,179, totaling approximately $22,885 per year. Simultaneously, an individual can buy a 2019 Volkswagen Beetle for $20,885 – an additional $2,000 per year.

·       Even when individuals have health insurance, they may be underinsured, meaning they have high out-of-pocket costs such as high deductibles.

·       Forty-one percent of underinsured patients delayed care due to high out-of-pocket costs leading to fewer visits, preventive care and skipped prescription medications.

·       The rate of underinsured individuals has risen from 23% in 2014 to 29% with the largest percentage being from those individuals with employer-based plans.

·       Almost half (47%) of underinsured adults reported medical debt problems – nearly twice the rate as those who are not underinsured (25%).

Even closer to home, although Georgia has not expanded Medicaid, the state of ranks number 39 in the United States in access to care while approximately 28% of the state’s population is drowning in past-due medical debt.
