The Lady Cats basketball team got its much desired revenge against Colquitt County on Tuesday.

After a heartbreaking 1-point loss to the Lady Packers at home in November, Bainbridge traveled to Moultrie and got their first win there in the Kelvin Cochran era.

“That was first time I have won over there,” Coach Cochran said happily.

Bainbridge’s 47-42 win improves the team to 9-2.

Nadia Marshall led the charge for the Lady Cats with 17 points. A couple fouls in the first quarter led Cochran to pulling her for the rest of the half. Bainbridge was leading 12-7 after the first quarter, but the Lady Packers poured in 23 points in the second and held Bainbridge to just 6.

Other starters were also getting called for multiple fouls, and Cochran had to keep the team together long enough to make it to halftime.

“It was like the wheels coming off in the second quarter,” Cochran said. “We had a come to Jesus meeting and came back out to play some ball. Fourth quarter, we just locked them down and played good defense.”

Marshall came right back out and hit two 3-pointers to kick off the second half.

Bainbridge added 18 to the board in the third quarter and another 11 points in the fourth, holding Colquitt County to just 12 points in the second half.

Tytianna Roseborough scored 16 points, 15 of which came from 3-pointers.

Last weekend, Bainbridge traveled to Harris County and lost 75-57 to start 0-1 in Region 1-AAAAA. Cochran attributes a sluggish and tired team to the loss, but was proud of the way they bounced back to beat Cairo the next night 57-35.

“I think we are in a good spot,” Cochran said.

Bearcats basketball coach Terry Smith feels the same way about his varsity boys team. Despite a 4-7 record, the past three games have been within a 1-point decision with 30 seconds or less left on the clock.

Smith is happy the Bearcats have had chances to win, but that’s only half of the goal he has set for his players.

“We just have to find a way to finish out games,” Smith said. “We could easily be 7-4, 8-3. This year we are getting close, we just have to get over the hump. I feel comfortable we are going to get over that hump.”

The Bearcats lost 52-48 to Harris County, beat Cairo 82-52 and fell to Colquitt County 45-41.

A couple weeks ago, Smith mentioned he was moving toward a more zone-read defense. So far he’s pleased with the way it’s worked.

“That’s been really good for us thus far,” Smith said. “With the two losses with Harris County and Colquitt, with 30 seconds or less in the game, we’re only down one point with the chance to win. Just a give us a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter.”

Colquitt County only led by 2 points at the end of the first half, and both teams added 6 points in the third quarter. Bainbridge scored 15 points in the fourth and allowed 17 for the Packers to squeeze by with the win.

“Late in game, we have had bad shot selection,” Smith said. “That goes back to me. I got to a better job in practice.”

The Bearcats and Lady Cats will play Thomas County Central on Saturday on host Early County next Tuesday. Girls tip off at 6 p.m. and the boys tip off at 7:30 p.m.
