Be prepared!

The recent outbreaks of severe weather in our area have caught many of us unprepared.

This should serve as a warning to get ready, not only for the strong spring storms, but also for the upcoming hurricane season, which runs June 1 through Nov. 30.

Power outages that came in the night and remained for hours left some of us hunting flashlights only to discover the batteries were dead, and there were no replacements in the house.

It is time to take stock of emergency supplies.

In addition to batteries (for battery operated radio and NOAA weather radio and flashlights,) there should be a supply of bottled water (one gallon per day, per person), canned and non-perishable foods, (enough for three to seven days), non-electric can opener, first aid kit, medicines and prescription drugs, rain gear, basic tools, fully charged cellphones, toiletries and disinfectant wipes and basic tools.

Keep a supply of cash, as banks and ATMs may not be available for a while. Keep the auto fuel tanks filled.

Special care for pets would include gathering proper identification, immunization records, medications, and of course, a food and water supply.

Important documents, (insurance, medical records, Social Security cards, etc.) should be kept in a waterproof container or resealable plastic bag.

A complete list of recommended items can be found at www.nhc.noaa.gov.

These last two weeks should serve notice not to be flat-footed when the next storm occurs.
