Bainbridge City Councilwoman Roslyn Palmer has asked for a review of the speed limit on part of Douglas Drive in southeast Bainbridge.

The City Council unanimously approved a Georgia Department of Transportation speed limit ordinance for roads located within city limits.

In contrast with their counterparts on the Decatur County Board of Commissioners, Bainbridge City Council members had virtually no issues with the state-mandated ordinance.

County commissioners have tabled their version of the ordinance, citing “inconsistencies” with how the speed limits on county roads were determined.

Councilwoman Palmer asked City Manager Chris Hobby to consider asking the DOT to reconsider lowering the 35 miles-per-hour speed limit on Douglas Drive, between its intersections with U.S. 27 South and Lake Douglas Road. Palmer noted that along the portions of Douglas Drive extending northeast from Lake Douglas Road, the speed limit was only 30 mph.

The speed limit is also 30 mph on Twin Lakes Drive and Pineland Drive, two well-traveled streets adjoining Douglas Drive, Palmer noted.

Hobby said city officials could ask DOT engineers to do a survey, including a traffic count, to determine what the speed limit should be.

County commissioners have suggested the same studies be done for a few roads where the speed limit the DOT recommended was deemed too fast in commissioners’ view.

County Administrator Tom Patton was instructed to look into the process by which the DOT-recommended limits were derived.

Other business

In other business, the City Council:

 Approved, by two separate unanimous votes, the renewal of an alcoholic beverage license for Margie Valencia, doing business as Captain Jack’s, 318 E. Water St., for sales of beer and wine for on-premises consumption; and the renewal of an alcoholic beverage license for Chi Trinh, doing business as Yuki Express, 2007 Frontage Road, for sales of beer for on-premises consumption.

 Approved, by unanimous vote, a request from the city’s Main Street Department to temporarily close the portion of Water Street between Crawford and West streets during the hours of 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17. The street closing will accommodate the city-sponsored Christmas on the Square holiday event.

 Held an approximately 10-minute closed session to discuss a personnel issue. When the open meeting resumed, Mayor Mark Harrell reported that no action was taken.

Bills and Bids

Bills: $12,763 from Decatur County Board of Elections and Registration for cost of the city’s general municipal election held Nov. 3; and $15,000 from Lanagan and Associates of Thomasville, Ga., for interim billing for field work associated with auditing of the city’s 2008-2009 fiscal year budget.

Bids: $9,284.06 from Command Uniforms of Macon, Ga., for Public Safety uniforms.
