Sophomore midfielder Angel Bonilla-Ortiz scored five goals in the Bearcats’ 10-0 mercy rule victory over Westover. The five-goal effort produced Bonilla-Ortiz’s first career varsity hat trick.

“He really is a hard worker,” Bearcats’ head coach Brian Hill said of Bonilla-Ortiz. “He grinds and he works. He’s always got a ball on his foot, working on his touches and passes, man, he loves soccer.”

Ortiz achieved his hat trick in less than 10 minutes, scoring his third goal at 8:17 into the game.

Five other goal scorers joined him to reach the 10-point mercy rule in 42 minutes and 52 seconds of game time— 2 minutes and 52 seconds into the second half.

The win puts them at a 12-2 regular season record and a 6-1 record in Region 1-4A. They’re tied with Cairo for the first-place spot in the region, and they get the chance to take the top spot when they welcome the Syrupmakers to Centennial Field on Friday, April 11.

The matchup serves as the region championship and a rematch of the Bearcats’ 1-0 loss to Cairo earlier in the season.

“[I want to see them] play as hard as possible,” Hill said. “Play smart, play aggressive, and just enjoy the game… when we played them, we had a lot of shots, but they just didn’t seem to go in. So, hopefully, we can get it in the goal a few times.

The home match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12.
