Flint River experiences flooding following heavy weekend rains

UPDATE: The barricades closing the Earle May Boat basin are being removed, with the river level having dropped and expected to return to normal levels in the coming days.
UPDATE: After further rising water, the road leading to the campground and nature trail has been closed at the intersection of W. College and Cox Avenue. According to the National Weather Service, the river has now passed the 27.3 height crest.
Following recent heavy rains, the Flint River has experienced a noticeable rise, to such an extent that parts of Bainbridge have become flooded. According to the National Weather Service, the river’s last observed height, as of the writing of this article, was 26.69 feet, and is expected to crest at around 27.3 feet sometime tomorrow afternoon.
One of the most drastically affected areas is the Earle May Boat Basin, which has experienced such a drastic rise in water level that the City of Bainbridge closed several of the Basin’s recreational areas, including the campground, mega ramps and the long loop of the nature trail. In a Facebook post, the city stated that it will post when these areas are reopened.
Several other counties along the Flint have experienced flooding as well, including Mitchell, Lee and Crisp. More rain is forecast in the coming days, the Post-Searchlight will provide updates should more flooding occur.
