Mr. John William McCown Sr, 87, of Attapulgus, GA passed away in his home on March 7th, 2024. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 12th, at Oakridge Cemetery, 394 N.W. Meeting Avenue, in Madison, Florida. Mr. McCown was a graduate of the Georgia Military Academy (now Woodward) in College Park, Georgia and earned his BS in Business Administration at The Citadel. He served in the United States Army, including a tour of Korea, and he was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. He dedicated thirty years to the timber industry and farming across Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. Mr. McCown was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a founding board member of First Port City Bank. He had an affinity for classic literature, film, and music. He was a committed steward to the land he lived on and to many loving animals. Mr. McCown’s resounding faith in his Savior grew continuously and fostered his constant love and devotion for his wife, Sissy. In October, he would have been married to his wife for sixty one years. Survivors include his loving wife, Sissy McCown; daughter, Ellie and David Johnson; son, John Jr and Kate McCown; siblings, Carolyn and Buddy LaBorde, Mac and Nina McCown, and Martha Owens; Grandchildren, David James Johnson, Sarah Kate Johnson, Caroline Johnson, Gracie Johnson, Mary Ella McCown, Jack McCown, and Ashlyn McCown, along with several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 7067, Bainbridge GA 39818.
