Back in November when the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall was at the Earle B. May Boat Basin, some visitors left items at the base of the section where their friend or family’s name appeared. The Wall and the area surrounding it are considered Sacred Ground; in keeping with the sanctity of that space, the Decatur County Historical & Genealogical Society made a commitment to honorably dispose of the items left there.

On Tuesday, February 13^th, at 9:30 a.m. the items will be properly buried in space at the Jack Wingate Outdoor Classroom, located across from the smokehouse/launch parking lot. The items will be buried in a small vault donated by Bryant Funeral Home and a permanent marker, donated by Hall Monument Company, will forever mark the memorabilia left there. The location is on a hill and has never been flooded when the Flint River rises, so it should always be secure there.

“There won’t be a “ceremony” per se, but if you’d like to come and pay respect to the items that will be laid to rest, please join us,” said Historical Society president Roslyn Palmer.
