The Cougars fell to the Westwood Wildcats 30-15 in their opening game.
A 12-point Wildcat lead in the first half proved too much for the Cougars to overcome despite a second-half resurgence.
The first half was all Wildcats. They shut out the Cougars and scored two touchdowns, failing to convert both points after attempts. McClure said the game was the team’s first taste of real action and that they needed time to adjust.
“When you only have 14 guys, it’s almost impossible to simulate live action in practice,” said head coach Richard McClure. “It was just that first game jitters and realizing what a football game is like. In the second half, they realized, ‘Ok, yeah, this is what it’s like,’ and then they played ball. That’s what they did in the second half. They just started playing ball.
Junior quarterback Owen Earnest scored two rushing touchdowns and ran in a two-point conversion in the second half. Junior linebacker Noah Smith secured a fumble and was involved in most of the Cougars’ positive offensive plays in the half.
“I can say I’m proud of you,” McClure told his team. “All we can control is ourselves… You kept fighting for me. You kept fighting for your coaches. That’s all we ask you to do. Now we’ve got to build on this.”
