Georgia’s 2024 SEC opponents are set.

 

The SEC announced the Bulldogs’ opponents and locations — along with the rest of the SEC teams’. 

 

The standout fixtures are road games against Alabama and Texas. 

 

The schedule:

 

Home: Auburn, Mississippi State, Tennessee

 

Away: Alabama, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Texas

 

Neutral: Florida

 

The Bulldogs have played twice in Tuscaloosa during the Saban era. They won in 2007, Saban’s first year as head coach, and lost in 2020. The team is 2-7 total against Saban. 

 

The game against Texas will be Georgia’s sixth-ever matchup with the Longhorns. They are 1-4 against Texas all time, 1-1 in the modern era (1970-present). 2024 will be the team’s first year in the SEC, joining alongside Oklahoma. The programs leave the BIG-12 to join the SEC after an exit agreement was made in 2021. 

 

David Mackey, Bainbridge High School Co-Athletic Director and longtime UGA fan, said he’s not worried about the road games. Mackey said Georgia’s most challenging opponent is themselves.

 

“It looks like the 2024 year is going to be a cakewalk, but Georgia has to guard against complacency,” Mackey said. “Everybody’s gunning for you when you’re the champs.”

 

There was one common complaint to the schedule release online: a lackluster home slate. @cape_johnathan on Twitter replied to Georgia’s announcement tweet, saying, “Love my Dawgs… but we season ticket holders got robbed.” Multiple commenters said they would’ve been okay with the home matchups if Georgia played Florida in Athens.

 

Every year, Georgia plays Florida at a neutral site in Jacksonville, Fl, because it is equidistant from both schools. Mackey said that even though the game in Jacksonville is considered neutral on the schedule, more Georgia fans are present. 

 

“One thing you’re gonna learn about Georgia fans is that they will travel,” Mackey said. “I don’t care if you’re playing on Jupiter, they will travel.… Years ago, especially when Florida had the upper hand, it would be 50/50, but lately, it has been Georgia about 60/40.”

 

For the other games on the schedule, The Dawgs face Auburn and Tennessee at home. Mackey said the Georgia-Auburn rivalry has always felt like a “big-brother little-brother type of thing” and is confident that they’ll win. He reserves respect for the Volunteers, calling them a “good test” for the bulldogs, but ultimately thinks Georgia shouldn’t have trouble through the season. 

 

“I’m not worried at all,” Mackey said. “If you the two-time champs, what is there to be worried about?”
