The Firehouse Art Gallery was bustling on Monday morning as kids came for the first day of the Firehouse’s summer camp program, this year dubbed the Kidcasso Summer Art Camp. The camp will last for three weeks, two for 1st through 3rd grades and one for 4th through 6th grades. Two weeks of classes will be held in June, the third being scheduled for July.

As the name “Kidcasso” suggests, the main focus of the classes are the works and style Picasso. “The idea that he used shape and color in all his work, and he was a young artist, he created his first piece at nine, so we thought he would be a fun one for kids to play with,” Firehouse executive director Jessica Polsky explained to the Post-Searchlight. The camp is being taught by Lindsey Anderson and Mary Alice Long, Anderson having taught the Firehouse’s previous camps.

According to Polsky, the turnout has already been impressive. “We’re full, all classes got booked,” she said. There is currently a waiting list for next week’s classes, and a size limit of 16 kids per class. “We don’t have enough room for another chair,” Polsky continued.

The cost for one child to attend the summer camp is $120 for the whole week, with some scholarships available. For more information on the summer camp and scholarships, the Firehouse can be contacted during business hours at 229-243-1010.

“We just love seeing children play after a long school year,” Polsky said, “it’s fun to offer them some creativity and play. We love to be a resource for that.”

The next big event on the Firehouse’s schedule is the upcoming Royal Tea Party, which will feature a preview of the gallery’s next collection, live music, a champagne happy hour, and of course, tea, scones and sandwiches. This is scheduled for June 22. Following this, on June 23, the gallery will hold its Shades of Summer regional art show opening night.
