A crowd gathered in the Grace Christian Academy gymnasium last Wednesday, as one senior Cougar took the next step in his education, with senior John Crews signing with Gordon State College’s football program. When asked what drew him to choose Gordon, Crews said, “It’s local and in state, so I can get in-state tuition. It’s closer to my family and friends and everything.” Crews has yet to declare his major, and had good things to say about the school’s football team. “I haven’t been around the whole team, but the players that I’ve been around, and the coach, they bring good vibes, and they know what they’re doing up there.”
GCA coach Lance Godwin spoke with the Post-Searchlight about Crews’ decision as well. “I think he’s done good, he’s picked something, it’s a smaller school, that I think he can excel at. He picked a place where he felt he would be at home, with a smaller school with teammates that really seemed to surround him when he went up for a visit.”
Godwin also spoke fondly of Crews’ time at GCA, saying, “He ended up coming to school here to help out with the team, and he quickly became the leader of the team… he just showed his leadership on and off the field, and did what he was asked.” He concluded, “I hope the best for him, and we’ll be cheering for him, and hope we get a chance to see him. It’s a big step for Grace Athletics in general just to have another one sign for college, so it was good for everybody.”
