On Tuesday March 14, Grace Christian Academy senior Kevin Brooks added to his already impressive trophy case as he was named GIAA Region 1A Basketball Player of the Year after a season that saw Brooks help lead the Cougars to a 15-9 overall record and a playoff win against Fullington Academy. 2023 was an extremely successful year for Brooks as he not only was a leader for the Cougars squad, but also filled the stat sheet as he averaged double digit points and rebounds on the season.

Although winning the award was special to Brooks, his gratitude went towards his coaches and teammates who surrounded him all season long and helped the team reach new heights during 2023.

“It was really cool to win the award and see all the hard work I’ve put in come through,” said Brooks. “It was cool to see all the support from my coaches and teammates and just see the team grow and improve throughout the season.”

The 2022-23 season was filled with memorable moments for the Cougars basketball program and head coach Travis Harrison. From back-to-back overtime wins against Georgia Christian and Fullington Academy to a 6-1 record in the month of December, this season saw the Cougars take their Region by storm. For Brooks, the highlight of the season came in a comeback road win against Westwood. After having to overcome injuries and adversity, Brooks and the Cougars fought back to earn a close 69-62 win.

“My favorite memory from this season would have to be in our second game against Westwood,” said Brooks. “Jafus (Ferguson) and CoCo (McKay) , two of our best players were injured so a lot of our younger players had to step up. I remember just being down and then us making a comeback to win. Seeing our younger guys rally and fight back was pretty cool to see.”

During his time at Grace Christian Academy, Brooks has been one of the main focal points in building a successful sports program. Whether it’s winning the WTXL Football Play of the Year or GIAA Region 1-A Basketball Player of the Year, Brooks has seen the GCA program grow since day one and has done his part on leaving a legacy for future Cougars to look back upon.

“It’s cool to see how much things have changed and grown since the beginning,” said Brooks. “To be honest I haven’t really been the one that’s produced these changes. I just played sports and am surrounded by a great school with great people, coaches and teammates. So many people have poured into our sports programs and they’re the ones to thank.”

Brooks was especially thankful of the support his parents have shown him throughout his childhood. Whether it’s being at every game or giving advice, Brooks’ parents have been his supporters since day one.

“My parents have been my biggest fans since the beginning,” said Brooks. “I have to give God and my parents all the glory because without them nothing would be possible. I’ve been able to have great teammates and coaches and just an overall great group of people here at GCA.”

Although Brooks’ plans after graduation are still being decided, Brooks has left a legacy at Grace Christian Academy that will live on for years to come.
